Balgove Larder is among three Fife farm shops that have been named as finalists in the Great British Food Awards category for Best Farm Shop & Deli in Scotland.

Balgove Larder, Ardross Farm Shop and The Buffalo Farm are all contenders for the award, alongside Billingtons of Lenzie and Valvona & Crolla of Edinburgh. Bowhouse in the East Neuk of Fife has also been highlighted as a finalist in the Food Market category.

The Great British Food Awards were launched in 2014 to celebrate the country’s finest artisanal produce, as well as the hard-working people behind the scenes. This year, the awards have been expanded with judges including Raymond Blanc OBE, Masterchef’s Monica Galetti, Olly Smith, Eric Lanlard and Miguel Barclay. As a region, Fife has an unusually high number of nominations with Ardross Farm Shop, Balgove Larder and The Buffalo Farm all up for the Best Farm Shop in Scotland category.

Founder of Balgove Larder, Will Docker said:

“The past months have been a real challenge for the whole team so being named as a finalist for these awards has been a boost for the whole team here. I’m delighted that Balgove Larder is named as a finalist but to see so many businesses from across Fife is a real demonstration of the vibrant food and drink scene here.”

Founded in 2010 and based just outside St Andrews in Fife, Balgove Larder has become a destination for locals and visitors alike, who are able to shop for the best Scottish food and drink from Fife and beyond, including seasonal produce direct from Balgove Larder’s own farms and award-winning meat prepared by their team of traditionally skilled butchers. By converting former farm buildings, Balgove Larder now includes a Farm Shop, Steak Barn, Butchery, Flower Shed, Homestore and Café.

Although some aspects of the business have had to close during the Coronavirus, Balgove Larder’s farm shop has remained open with an expanded delivery service. Earlier this month, following the Scottish Government’s guidance around the relaxation of lockdown rules, the popular Steak Barn has reopened for takeaways. The Steak Barn, which is housed in a repurposed sawmill with distinctive potato crate walls, will open weekly from Friday 12pm  – Sunday 6pm, for BBQ takeaway in the first instance.
