St Andrews farm shop Balgove Larder is announcing that it will double the size of its current café on the back of strong sales that have seen customers enjoy 56,760 scones and 61,644 cups of coffee in 2017 alone.
The weight of the scones sold (approximately 8,800kg) equates to the weight of around eighteen racehorses. Balgove Larder sells an average of 170 cups of coffee every day.
Will Docker, founder of Balgove Larder said:
“The popularity of the café at Balgove Larder is unbelievable and we’re famous for the scones and other dishes that our cooks produce. We specialise in using local ingredients, farmed ourselves or sourced from local producers. It seems to be a menu that encourages everyone to eat like a horse and with that in mind, it’s high time we increased the size of the café!
“We opened our doors for the first time in 2010 with just seven members of staff and now have a team of more than 60. We’re selling cups of coffee at a rate of about 21 an hour so it’s fair to say that we have an incredibly hardworking team here at Balgove Larder and it’s a testament to all the staff that we’ve been able to expand in this way.”
Work will begin in January to transform the 45-cover café by 215 square metres into an enlarged outlet, capable of seating 90. The project is due to be completed in March 2018. The expansion will create five new jobs.
