The famous ‘Home of Golf’ is without doubt one of Fife’s major visitor destinations, and its top-rated university with thousands of students contribute to a lively atmosphere with lots to see and do.
The glorious East and West Sands, the cathedral, St Andrews Castle, St Andrews Museum, and the St Andrews Aquarium are just a few of the town’s many attractions.
They are more than matched by some of the cuisine on offer, not least in the five star establishments at Old Course Hotel Resort and Spa overlooking the iconic golf links, and Fairmont St Andrews on its cliff top site south east of the town. In addition Rufflets Country House Hotel with its pretty gardens (including an exceptional kitchen garden) lies just outside the town.
There are hotels, restaurants, cafes and tea shops galore, including the chic Adamson and its sister restaurant Next Door, The Grange Inn, CombiniCo, which serves fresh-as-can-be Japanese dishes, and two of Scotland’s best fish and chip shops: Cromars, and The Tail End.
Fabulous Italian ice cream in around 50 flavours can be found at Jannettas Gelateria with queues for the world-famous iced delights sometimes snaking down the street. St Andrews Brewing Company’s pubs on North Street and South Street serve its own beers while just out of town, Kingsbarns Distillery and Visitor Centre offers tours of the whisky distillery and visits to the Gin Cottage.
Food shops include the famous IJ Mellis cheesemonger and the bakery firm Fisher & Donaldson, which is famous for its fudge dougnuts and has been rewarded with a royal warrant. On the outskirts of the town, Balgove Larder farm shop and café is extremely popular, particularly for its Steak Barn with wood-fired BBQ at its centre.
